Contributor guidelines

Useful to the reader. Clear about the law. Supported by sources.

Choose a useful question

Write for family-law professionals: attorneys, paralegals, court reporters, social workers and related practitioners.

Case commentary, explanations of legislation or court rules, practical analysis and comparisons across jurisdictions are welcome. Identify the jurisdiction, the question and what the reader will learn.

Show your sources

Use accurate citations and link to primary authorities for important legal propositions. Identify the date through which the article addresses the law, and explain any limits on its scope.

Distinguish what an authority holds from your interpretation. Explain material exceptions and procedural context; identify proposed or pending changes as such.

Identify the author and the work

Include your name, affiliation, relevant experience and any material conflicts. Add a short biography and a website link if you would like one considered with your byline.

Submit your own work. Disclose prior publication and identify permissions needed for quotations, images or other material belonging to others. Leave out confidential client information and private case documents.

Write for understanding

Lead with the point, use descriptive headings and explain specialized terms. Separate factual reporting from analysis and opinion, and support important conclusions.

Keep the scope focused enough to check carefully. Article length can be discussed after the initial proposal.

How review works

Each article is checked before publication. A proposal starts the conversation.

  1. Fit and scope

We consider the question, its relevance to readers and the proposed approach.

  2. Source support and revisions

We check the manuscript for accuracy, source support, clarity and material qualifications. We may ask for sources, changes or a narrower scope.

  3. Agreement before publication

Final text, byline and permission to publish must be agreed. Full manuscript arrangements and any compensation are discussed after the initial proposal; publication or payment is not promised.
